If you are working on creating a logo for a new or existing company, there are several things you need to keep in mind.
While you want an innovative and unique design, you also want it to be timeless and able to be used in a variety of situations.
You need to make sure the logo speaks about your vision for the company and the products or services offered.
Below are four things to consider to design a logo.
Appropriateness – If you are designing a logo, make sure that it really applies to your brand. While the graphic you have in mind may look great, think about whether it really speaks about what you are offering to your clients. For example, if you are the manager of a childrens’ store, an image of a child may be appropriate; if you are a director of an architectural firm, considering having a building as part of your logo.
Simplicity – Think about the most successful logos that come to mind. For example, the simplicity of the McDonald’s golden arches, or the Nike swoosh logo, which symbolizes movement. These are some of the most recognizable brands in the world, and not only because the corporations that own them are so successful, but because they are simple and easy to remember. Don’t overthink your own logo, design something that is simple to relate with.
Uniqueness – The logo is one of the most important marketing decisions you will need to make to represent your business. This image should stand for your company alone, and should not be confused with any other logo. Therefore, you need to do your research and make sure that this graphic will be unique and not resemble any other logos used by other organisations. Not only will you fail to be innovative if you design a logo that is a copy of another business, but you will risk being taken to care for copyright infringement.
Words – When designing a logo, you need to decide whether you will have an image, just words, or both. For example, your logo can be the name of your company, such as the logos for Legos or Ikea; images, such as McDonald’s; or both, such as BMW and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Including the full name of a business will usually not work if the name is very long for lack of space; however trying to include the name is beneficial for added company recognition.
Designing the perfect logo to represent a brand can be a fun and creative process. Using the four items to consider above before picking the final design will help you make a wise decision.
